Fall 2020 ABD to PhD Workshops Schedule Available

The Writing Skills Improvement Program, the Think Tank, the Graduate and Professional Student Council, and the Graduate Center are pleased to announce the Fall 2020 ABD to PhD Dissertation Writing Workshop Series.

The purpose of the series is to provide instructional support, discuss writing-related concerns about the dissertation process, and introduce strategies to facilitate writing. Participants should bring a short sample of their writing to workshops and be prepared to work collaboratively with peers from diverse disciplines. Registration is required.

This series is offered entirely online and is free to attend. Space is limited. ABD (all-but-dissertated) students will be given registration priority.

Fall 2020 Schedule

All sessions are held via Zoom. The Zoom meeting link is the same for all sessions in the series, and it is provided after you complete the registration form. You are welcome to sign up for any number of workshops.

Wednesday, September 2, 4:30pm-6:30pm Arizona Time

Topic: Effective Planning and Working with Faculty

  • Description: We will address common concerns that affect the writing process, including communicating effectively with faculty, managing the dissertation process timeline, and maximizing campus resources for graduate students.

Wednesday, October 7, 4:30pm-6:30pm Arizona Time

Topic: Literature Review 1.0: Dissertation Edition

  • Description: We will discuss literature reviews and how to include them effectively in various dissertation formats. We will explore ways to organize and connect secondary sources, share examples from multiple disciplines, and apply organizational strategies to our discussions of the literature. This workshop is intended for students new to, or struggling with, the process of writing a literature review.

Wednesday, November 4, 4:30pm-6:30pm Arizona Time

Topic: Avoiding Wordiness in Academic Writing

  • Description: We will explore ways to identify and fix common causes of sentence-level wordiness. Please have a short sample of your writing available for this workshop.
