Mission
The Sloan* Indigenous Graduate Partnership (SIGP) is a consortium of higher education institutions that seek to transform graduate STEM education in ways that support: 1) the inclusion of Indigenous perspectives, knowledge, values and experiences in scientific research, teaching, and community engagement; 2) allow scholars to address issues relevant to Indigenous communities, 3) encourage and prepare talented students who have such interests and expertise to pursue STEM graduate education and careers; and 4) foster strong community engagement on and across individual SIGP campuses.
The University of Arizona is a member of the SIGP consortium and as a research extensive institution, it is recognized as one of the top 20 institutions in the United States. It is ranked 14th by the National Science Foundation in research expenditures. The university is one of few institutions in the country that houses the Colleges of Agriculture, Science, Engineering, Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, and a Cancer Center in the same campus, providing exciting opportunities for research and learning.
The University has a strong track record of enrolling and graduating Native American students at the baccalaureate, master's and doctoral level. Over 700 undergraduates and approximately 200 graduate and professional Native American students attend the University of Arizona. It ranks number two in conferring Ph.D.'s to Native Americans according to the National Science Foundation (Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED) 2024 | NSF - National Science Foundation, Table 7-4).
