Graduate Writing Lab hosts workshops and information sessions to help you succeed in your writing goals. Unless otherwise noted, our events are hosted on Zoom and are free to attend.

Writing in Graduate School 

This workshop will provide an overview of the types of writing graduate school requires and campus resources to help graduate students succeed as writers. Prior to the workshop please review our slides. We will spend the workshop in activities and discussion, not reviewing the slides.

Let's Review the Lit Review

We will review what a literature review is and is not. We will share tools and resources to help you focus your literature reviews and keep them under control. Please review the slides prior to the workshop. The session will be spent doing activities. 

Exploring Ethical Uses of AI in Academic Writing and Research  

The Graduate Writing Lab invites current graduate students to join us for an open dialogue on the use of artificial intelligence in academic writing and research. This is not a training or demonstration of AI tools.  Instead, this session offers a space for critical reflection, shared learning, and an opportunity to engage with the implications and possibilities of AI in the context of graduate-level scholarship. Please note that this session is exclusively for graduate students.

ABD to PhD Writing Workshops

Writing professionals across campus have collaborated to create workshops that help ABD students at the beginning, middle, or end of the dissertation. Find materials in our shared folder online. Use your UArizona NetID and password to login.

  • Literature Review 1.0: Dissertation Edition: How to include literature reviews effectively in various dissertation formats.
  • Literature Review 2.0: Synthesizing Information: An overview of strategies for synthesizing information gathered from secondary sources, including how and when to paraphrase and use direct quotations.
  • Avoiding Wordiness in Academic Writing: Materials help writers identify and fix common causes of sentence-level wordiness.
  • Sentence Fluency: Learn how grammar patterns, transitions, sentence structure, and other components contribute to sentence-level fluency.
  • Effective Planning and Working with Faculty: Address common factors that affect the writing process, including communicating effectively with faculty, managing the dissertation process timeline, and maximizing campus resources for graduate students.
  • Writing In-depth Analysis to Support Your Research: An overview of how to write thoughtful and relevant interpretations of data and findings.
