Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad

The purpose of the Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (FH DDRA) fellowship is to contribute to the development and improvement of the study of modern foreign languages and area studies in the U.S. by supporting full-time dissertation research abroad.

Research projects must focus on one or more of the following geographic areas:  Africa, East Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, South Asia, the Near East, Central and Eastern Europe and Eurasia, and the Western Hemisphere (including South and Central America). Research in Western Europe and the U.S. and its territories is not supported by this grant.

A student is eligible to receive a fellowship if he or she:

  • Is a citizen or national of the United States or is a permanent resident of the United States;
  • Is a graduate student in good standing at an institution of higher education in the United States who, when the fellowship begins, is admitted to candidacy (ABD) in a doctoral program in modern foreign languages and area studies at that institution;
  • Is planning a teaching career in the United States upon graduation or plans to apply language skills (in world areas vital to US national security) and knowledge of these countries in the fields of government, international development,
    and various professions; and
  • Possesses adequate skills in the language(s) necessary to carry out the dissertation project.

An information session about the fellowship will be held on November 12, 2024 from 9:30 - 10:30 am on Zoom.  Please register for the session here.

The Department of Education’s deadline is January 15, 2025.  However, the UArizona internal deadline will be January 2, 2025.

Student applications for this fellowship are submitted through the University of Arizona Graduate College and Sponsored Projects, so applicants to the FH DDRA must meet internal deadlines established by this office. Eligible applications for the 2025 deadline are for research projects taking place between October 1, 2025 and March 31, 2027.
