Creating Inclusive and Equitable Learning Environments for Native American Students FLC

The Graduate College invites University of Arizona faculty, staff, postdoctoral scholars, and graduate students to participate in a Faculty Learning Community that supports the success and well-being of Native American students.

Participants in this community will have the opportunity to learn from Native American PhD Alumni, current Native American graduate students, and well-known Native American faculty, including but not limited to, Drs. Sweeney Windchief (Montana State University) and Jeremy Garcia (University of Arizona).

The FLC is made possible through a generous grant from the Agnese Nelms Haury Program in Environment and Social Justice.

The FLC meets monthly on select Wednesdays throughout the year.

  • Access to a toolkit of resources, strategies, and ideas for inclusive design
  • Build a circle of advocates for Indigenous student success
  • Increase your understanding of Indigenous students' assets and contributions to campus and community as well as ways to respectful recognize Indigenous scholars
  • Develop a greater understanding of the barriers facing Indigenous students and how to reduce or eliminate their impact.
  • Explore culturally relevant, Indigenous-focused mentorship models and teaching strategies
  • Learn and apply strategies to improve cultural climate in your department
  • Expand and refine your mentoring and leadership praxis
  • Lunch provided at each session

The FLC will cover a variety of subjects to support Indigenous student success, including but not limited to:

  • Indigenous-focused Mentoring Models
  • The Role of Family, Community, and Place
  • Traditional Ecological Knowledge
  • Inclusive and Equitable Learning Environments
  • Negotiating, Navigating, and Naming Successes and Challenges

University of Arizona faculty, staff, postdoctoral scholars, and graduate students are eligible to participate.

Participants are expected to contribute ideas, questions, and examples to the group discussions and actively participate in group activities.
