Global & Community Engagement
Work effectively and responsibly across differences by engaging with people and communities with respect, openness, and cultural awareness — strengthening access, participation, and ethical practice in academic, professional, and civic contexts.
Global & Community Engagement includes:
- Demonstrating cultural and contextual awareness in how you communicate, collaborate, and build relationships across diverse groups and settings
- Seeking input and feedback from people with different perspectives and lived experiences to inform decisions and improve outcomes
- Maintaining openness to new ideas and ways of working; adapting respectfully to different norms, environments, and communities
- Identifying practical barriers to participation, learning, or collaboration—and taking steps to reduce friction and improve access (processes, communication norms, resources)
- Contributing to climates of respect and psychological safety where individuals feel welcomed, heard, and able to participate fully
- Engaging ethically in local, global, and disciplinary communities (e.g., professional associations, community partnerships, research teams, public scholarship)
- Recognizing how social, cultural, and institutional contexts shape experiences and opportunities—and adjusting practices accordingly
- Using your role (as a peer, mentor, teammate, instructor, or leader) to support fair treatment and responsible decision-making within your sphere of influence
