In the whirl of academic life, it's easy to forget that true success is not just about grades, research projects, and deadlines. It includes holistic well-being, a concept that encompasses physical, mental, and emotional health. The Graduate Center recognizes the importance of student wellness and offers a range of resources to support you on your journey to success. In this article, we'll explore the importance of wellness and share how you can access the valuable resources available to you.

Why Wellness Matters

Wellness is the foundation upon which academic and personal achievements are built. It affects your ability to concentrate, your creativity, your resilience in the face of challenges, and your overall quality of life. In short, wellness is the key to unlocking your full potential.

I asked 2 simple questions of a few graduate students I ran into at the Graduate Center:

  1. How did you find out about the Graduate Center and
  2. Do you think wellness is important, and what are the primary facets of wellness to keep in mind?

All four interviewed students Dan Lewis Liam Busch Kelsy Nilles and Andrew Tang found out about the Graduate Center by taking a class located there or by attending a program run by or at the Center.

Regarding the important facets of a healthy lifestyle, Dan said, “Maintaining good mental health and exercise is certainly part of that, but there’s more you can do.” According to Liam, exercise, good diet, and mental health are key parts, and so is having the resources that people feel they need to accomplish their goals. He also notes that having good friends and family members and a school administration that is supportive of your goals is certainly influential in maintaining good health. Andrew said diet is important. Kelsey agreed with him and added that it is hard to carve out ‘me’ time in grad school, but it is important to find time for one’s mental health in order to be a better student and individual overall. Andrew agreed that mental health and rest are particularly important in grad school, but most don’t get to prioritize them.

Here are some important considerations for maintaining good health:

1. Physical Wellness: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is crucial. Eating a balanced diet, staying active, and getting enough sleep are essential. Physical wellness can increase your energy levels, sharpen your focus, and boost your immunity – all of which are critical for academic success.

2. Mental Wellness: Your mental well-being is equally important. Academic life can be stressful, and it's essential to have strategies to manage this stress. Mindfulness, meditation, and stress reduction techniques can help improve your mental health, increase your productivity, and enhance your overall well-being.

3. Emotional Wellness: Emotions play a significant role in your academic journey. Building emotional intelligence and resilience will help you manage setbacks, foster positive relationships, and cope with the demands of graduate school.

4. Social Wellness: Building and maintaining a strong support system is essential for your well-being. Forming meaningful connections with your peers, professors, and advisors can enhance your experience and provide a sense of belonging.
