Remembrance Event for Dr. Maria Teresa Velez

The University of Arizona community is invited to a remembrance event honoring Dr. Maria Teresa Vélez, a longtime educator, mentor, and advocate whose work helped expand access to higher education for generations of students.

Dr. Vélez served the University of Arizona for more than three decades and played a central role in advancing graduate education and supporting students from historically underrepresented communities. Her legacy continues through the many programs, scholars, and communities she helped build.

As part of this effort, the university has also launched a digital tribute page where alumni, colleagues, and students can share reflections, photos, or short messages honoring her life and impact. 

Event Details

The event will take place on March 31, 2026, from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. The gathering will include a short program followed by time for reflection and connection among alumni, colleagues, students, and community members whose lives were shaped by Dr. Vélez’s mentorship.
