The Sloan Consortium for Opportunities in Research Excellence (Sloan CORE) offers participants hands-on research experience with faculty mentoring, the integration of Indigenous knowledge, and a support team to guide them. This CURE (course-based research undergraduate experience) program is held on the University of Arizona (U of A) main campus, a highly-ranked Research Extensive (Research I) Land Grant institution with a large multicultural student body and over 200 graduate programs in a myriad of fields.
 The purpose of Sloan CORE is to provide students with:

  • the opportunity to carry out research as part of the 1-unit course.
  • an understanding of the approaches, issues, and research methodologies from both Western Science and Traditional Ecological Knowledge perspectives.
  • preparation for future research opportunities.
  • enhanced skills through personal development workshops and interaction with peers.

This program begins July 5, 2026 and culminates with a poster session on August 7, 2026 (5 weeks) over the summer; 40 hrs/week.

The Particulars

Program Attributes include:

Sloan CORE is open to University of Arizona and non-University of Arizona students.

To qualify for this program, students must have:

  • Undergraduate academic status.
  • Enrolled during the previous year in an accredited two-year or four-year university or community college.
  • U.S. Citizenship, Permanent Residence or Refugee status.
  • Time to commit to a full-time schedule of 40 hours a week. No additional classes or employment allowed during this program.

The Sloan CORE program provides participants with an opportunity to engage in research. The research objectives of the program are substantial and will require your full-time commitment. You will be expected to work on your research training, participate in field trips, and attend workshops/seminars.
