Safiyyah Ogundipe is a chemical engineering doctoral student from Harrisonburg, Virginia. She earned a B.S. in Chemical-Biological Engineering from MIT, where her final year of research focused on exploring proposed methods for PFAS ("forever chemicals") degradation using genetically-engineered bacteria and assay development. Among her experiences since graduating from MIT, she completed a public health internship with the Virginia Department of Health focused on using R to improve epidemiological responses to childhood lead exposure. Her research interests include environmental remediation, water and soil treatment, and emerging contaminants. She is passionate about working at the intersections of environmental health, community health, and both lab-scale and pilot-scale technologies, and she hopes to pursue research in a manner that does not confine itself to the academic lab. In her free time, she enjoys live music, art, and getting better at roller skating.
